I’m like most people. I enjoy hot chocolate in the winter. I like pumpkin pie in the autumn. And I always look forward to switching over to iced drinks in the springtime. But all of these simple seasonal pleasures combined don’t even come close to how much I love ice cream in the summer. Yeah, I know. So does everyone else. But not as much as I do.
No matter how much I stuff my face during dinner I will always have room to put down two scoops on a crisp wafer cone. No problem. And much like there are coffee snobs, wine snobs or people who only shop at Whole Foods snobs, I am an unabashed ice cream snob. None of this low-fat, sugar-free, store bought crap. I’m going out to get the richest, creamiest ice cream I can find served to me by some awkward teenager at their summertime job. Waiting in line isn’t a problem for me. In fact, I prefer it. It allots me more time to carefully decide which flavor I will ultimately choose. And the more unconventional the flavor, the better. Some of the most interesting flavors that I’ve tried have turned out to be some of my favorite. Cantaloupe - with real shavings from the melon. Maple Bacon – sweet and smoky with real bits of bacon. Salted Caramel – salty, sweet and utterly satisfying. Much like eating a delicious meal, I find myself silent, focused on the task at hand – eating my ice cream before it melts and begins to drip down the sides of the cone and onto my hand. As someone who tends to eat healthy I find no guilt in this summertime indulgence. On the contrary I find it to be more innocent than anything. Nostalgic. Pure. Delicious.
